WINE TASTING AT SHAFER VINEYARDS. Most extremely high-end wineries are stuffy. Not family-owned Shafer. Book a reservation for the Stag’s Leap district destination’s intimate $45, 90-minute tasting and you’ll savor not only the extremely coveted cabernet (and other varietals) and stunning secluded surroundings but also a laid-back, friendly attitude. Don’t forget to make reservations ahead of time; as with all the best attractions, it books up quickly. 6154 Silverado Trail, Napa, 707-944-2877 http://www.shafervineyards.com SHOPPING AT NAPA VALLEY OLIVE OIL COMPANY. This ramshackle shed with its customer business-card-coated interior is a beacon of old-fashioned country charm in chichi St. Helena town. But what transports it from a modest tourist attraction to a genuine destination is its olive oil. Affordable and sold in no-nonsense jugs for cash only, it’s great stuff. The experience of buying it here—and watching the owners tally your total on a brown paper bag—is priceless. 835 Charter Oak Ave., St. Helena, 707-963-4173 LOUNGING AT MEADOWOOD. This sprawling hillside luxury resort and locals members-only club is one of my favorite places to hole up in the valley. It’s got everything a guest could possibly want—hiking trails, a putting green, croquette (yes, really), a spa, huge outdoor pool, and destination restaurant. The only thing I like more than kicking it in one of the fully loaded freestanding cottages is gathering friends at the pool, ordering a pitcher of margaritas, and splashing around until the sun goes down. 900 Meadowood Lane, St. Helena, 800-458-8080 http://www.meadowood.com/
